Our favourite sets from Euro-summer

The Best Festival Sets of 2022 So Far

As the sun sets on festival season in the northern hemisphere, anticipation is starting to build down under. If you haven't heard, Europe's festival season just "went off". Think 'coiled spring' or 'overly taught elastic band'.

It's time now to bring the party back to Australia. Festival X will be one of the first large-scale festivals to land in 2022, and we are gearing up for our most extensive tour to date.

So, to get you all jazzed up, we've compiled our favourite mixes and moments from the far-away summer just gone, with a slight bias towards the Festival X family, of course.

Calvin Harris

Things kicked off in Europe in May when Calvin headlined Radio 1's Big Weekend, the official start to UK summer parties, and he proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's still the leading light of HOUSE.

Nina Kraviz

It's hard to pick a favourite Nina K 2022 moment; a relentless schedule saw the Russian DJ/producer barely miss a weekend, from the darkest Ibizan clubs to the most significant European festivals.

Our personal highlight is this one from Belgian long-runner, Pucklepop. A stunning 90 minutes of fast, hard and rolling Kraviz with a bunch of unreleased stuff from her label thrown in.

Prospa

A defining moment for the UK duo. Criminally underrated? Maybe. One of the slickest Boiler Room live sets of recent years? Undoubtedly.

Here's Prospa at AVA festival in Belfast!.

Boyz Noize

OK, technically not a festival set, but one we couldn't skip. Alex, live in the mix from Berlin's most pristinely tiled radio studio. Here's Boys Noize from HOR.

Nora En Pure

How do you stand out in a sea of Pandemic live streams? Swiss Mountain (2021)? On the back of a boat in the Bahamas (2022)? When it comes to filming DJ sets, Nora goes the extra mile. Here's her real-life set from another insanely stunning backdrop, EDC. One of our deep summer favs.

Tchami

Killer stuff from the Frenchman recorded at Ultra 2022. Öwnboss & Sevek's 'Move Your Body' goes off, John Summit's La Danza makes a well-timed appearance (house cut of the summer?), and it's littered with exclusive remixes and edits from the man himself.

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan has been blazing a trail all year and still had time to drop one of the hottest LPs of 2022, Traumazine.

X will be Megan's first time in Australia, and if her headline sets at Glastonbury and Wireless are anything to go by, we're in for a thrilling ride.

Don't miss it, hotties.

Chace

Choomba

Choomba

There's always something fresh in the waters of Australian dance music, and cousins Christian & Tim of party-starting tag-team Choomba are no exception. Straight out of the gate with a debut EP that stormed into the notoriously competitive Top 5 Beatport Release Chart, earning them support from global heavyweights like Claude Von Stroke, the boys have gone on to define the let-your-hair-down brand of Aussie dance music taking over the world. With two high rotation singles under their belt, the massive 2020 anthem ‘La Luh’ and latest melter ‘Say It’ achieving the ‘Triple J Most Played’ status this past March, the duo have established themselves as one of the countries most exciting exports in house and techno. The sold out ‘Pack Your Bags’ tour solidified them as dancefloor movers, and a must-have for major festival bills across the country. In recent news, Choomba have been announced as the replacement to Ashton Shuffles 11-year stint on Triple J’s widely popular Friday night dance show.

Don Toliver

Don Toliver

If Don Toliver pulled up in a spaceship, nobody would question it. His music might also be its own solar system with otherworldly hip-hop, smoked-out R&B, ambitious pop, and a little rock in a planetary orbit around the multiplatinum singer, songwriter, and artist. It might seem like he hails from some far-away galaxy, but he calls Houston, TX home. Forged in the fires of his hometown’s darkest corners, he ground out a visionary style in underground shows, elevating the post-genre grime and grit of his city into mainstream focus during 2018. Within three years, he gathered billions of streams, scored platinum plaques, and received praise courtesy of everybody from High Snobiety to Interview Magazine. However, it’s all a part of his life—as chronicled on his 2021 second full-length album, Life Of A DON [Cactus Jack/Atlantic Records]. “This is UFO music,” he grins. “I’m on alien-type shit. I sprinkle a little of R&B, rap, rock, and everything else. I’m like a hitchhiker because I pick up different vibes along the way. I mess with it until I can’t anymore. Then, I find another ride. For Life Of A DON, I had my thumb out on the side of the road. When this ride’s over, I’m getting on the next one to wherever I’m going.”

Green Velvet

Green Velvet

This music industry legend, trailblazer, and currently one of the hottest DJs and producers on the underground electronic music scene, Green Velvet, came into existence more than 25 years ago. In 1993 Green Velvet launched Relief Records, and he's been a constant and revered presence in the industry since that time. When eccentric, green Mohawk-wearing Green Velvet emerged, he sent shock waves throughout the House and Techno music scenes. However, what was even more intriguing was his background. Born in the southern suburbs of Chicago, IL, he has always been an active athlete and focused student determined to follow his dream of becoming a chemical engineer. While he excelled scholastically, he was socially introverted but always committed to finding ways to share his enthusiasm for living. Even today, more than 25 years later, it isn't easy to go to an electronic music festival or set and not hear music from Green Velvet/Relief Records. Crowds everywhere sing along when notable hits like: Bigger than Prince, Flash, La La Land, Lazer Beams, Live Stream, Preacher Man, Shake and Pop, Sheeple, Suga, and Voicemail, are blasting across the airwaves.

His feel-good floor-fillers take the pumping grooves of his hometown’s classic house music, add a healthy dose of melody, and top it all off with 2020s studio polish. In 2022 he’s set to tour across the globe with key festival plays at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Tomorrowland, Bonnaroo, Parklife, and more. With the announcement of his new label/event brand ‘Off The Grid’, Summit is displaying no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Key4050

Key4050

As many of the world’s truly outstanding clubs have a habit of doing, Dublin’s Temple Theatre became a lightning rod for embryonic electronic music talent. Post-millennium, it acted as a beacon for a new emerging wave of Irish DJs, who - congregating in the former church’s Space and Crypt club floors, were musically schooled by a succession of superstar DJs. A temple in every sense, it was there, in 2002 that the paths of local Dublin lad Bryan Kearney and John O’Callaghan from up the road in Navan first crossed. An instant musical connection made, after hours, the pair would regularly head to John’s makeshift studio at his apartment in the city’s south inner city. To gain access to that apartment complex, a gate code was required. That code was Key4050. Key4050’s musical lineage was influenced by several producers, but none more so though than Mauro Picotto and his inimitable BXR sound. “Like a god” is how John describes the genre-fusing Italian, and his productions were regularly dissected by the duo in the post-Temple hours. In 2003, at the peak of the Temple’s success (“the best clubbing experiences of my life”, attests O’Callaghan), restoration costs calamitously pushed it into closure. Whilst mourning its loss, conversely, it also spurred an impetus in a new wave of rising DJ/producers. They went on to recast Irish electronic music in their image. With the club playing the most fundamental parts in fomenting their careers, John and Bryan long looked for a way to pay dues to it. The solution lay on hard drives, some dating back over a decade. There, amongst dozens upon dozens of demos, ideas, half-completes, and all-but-there works lay the musical essence of their Temple experiences. So Bryan and John went to work finishing a job that - at the time – they didn’t even know they’d begun.
Laura King

She has well and truly become an integral part of Australia’s techno scene.
Len Faki

Len Faki

Few musicians in the underground scene have had the same impact that Len Faki has had during his career spanning over two decades. As an original Berghain resident, he's risen to become one of the most in-demand artists on the circuit, playing in every corner of the world. His performances are an audio-visual adventure where he is not only playing to the crowd but rather performing for and with them. As a label-head, he's released over 130 records on his Figure imprint, giving a necessary platform to predominantly emerging artists. As a producer and, most importantly, an artist, his creative flair knows no bounds, with his sound constantly evolving and never losing the same vibrant, unique energy and passion he puts into his sets. It has been an incredible journey for the Stuttgart native, who moved to Berlin in 2003. It didn't take long for him to establish himself in Germany's burgeoning techno-capital. Having played at Ostgut a few times, he was one of the first residents of the newly formed Berghain, playing the opening night many years ago. Still, not knowing the significance of such a moment at the time, there was a feeling that they were onto something special. His affiliation with Berghain is truly special; there's no other place he's played more, and the club set-up is second nature to him and is where he often tests out new material. The characteristics of an extra long DJ set in what he calls his "living room " inspire him to vary in tone and fully roll out his style to explore and further deepen his mastery of turning a DJ set into a bona fide musical journey.
Luude

Luude

Australian electronic producer LUUDE has quickly risen to the forefront of the scene with his unique take on dance music - effortlessly crossing through genres to great effect. Also recognised as one half of the well-respected Australian duo, Choomba, who have been endorsed by tastemakers such as The Magician, Claude Von Stroke, Richie Hawtin, Claptone, Riva Starr, and Erick Morillo. Most recently, the production powerhouse released ‘Say It feat. LP Giobbi & Blush’ko’, which had the heavy support of triple j and dance music icons, Martin Jensen and Benny Benassi! LUUDE talks about refining his sound, “I always want to be making stuff that feels exciting - and I’ve been working on this next phase for LUUDE for a while, just trying to find the right elements, so while Choomba was doing its thing last year I’ve been really refining the LUUDE project and I’m excited to return to touring with this new direction, the shows and plans we have are really exciting.” With only a handful of releases under his belt, LUUDE has scored over 30 million streams across his catalogue. Moreover, his singles have also caught the attention of tastemaker outlets Stoney Roads, Pilerats, DJ Times and This Song Is Sick. Sub Focus

Sub Focus

Throughout a 16-year career, Nick Douwma, aka Sub Focus has risen through the ranks of the underground jungle to become a global dance music superstar. First, building a reputation around air-punching, dancefloor-dismantling drum & bass, he now draws from all corners of the electronic landscape - epitomising the 'anything goes' mantra of today's scene. His journey began in 2003, when he signed his first tunes to drum & bass' biggest label Ram Records, off the back of a CD:R handed to label boss Andy C by one of his friends whilst drunk. Despite this inauspicious introduction, the legendary DJ was so impressed by the content that he duly signed every track and invited Douwma to join the Ram family. Sub Focus' tunes - expansive, fiercely creative, but made with the scientific precision of a military warhead - immediately stood out from the crowd and were soon being rotated by every major DJ in the scene, garnering airplay on mainstream radio and drawing fans from throughout the globe. The next logical step was an album. But as he's shown throughout his career, Douwma wanted to push himself further and create something more encompassing than the often insular confines of drum & bass. Drawing on his love of all strains of dance music, from 80s synth pioneers Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre, through dance leviathans The Chemical Brothers to futuristic house and techno acts like Lindstrom and Matthew Dear, his eponymous debut album released in 2009 featured not only drum & bass but dubstep, old-school breakbeat, bumping house and lashings of electro and rock, all brought together in a taut collection that could only have been made in the 21st century. It was an instant hit. Rather than taking his foot off the gas, the decade since has been similarly successful for one of dance music's enduring stars. Sophomore album Torus was released in 2013, channelling a dancefloor-focused, floor-filling vibe. The 13-track release included 'Endorphins' and 'Turn Back Time', singles that both made it into the UK Top 10, whilst three others made it into the Top 40. Douwma has spent the past few years perfecting his stunning, immersive live show, joining Pendulum on tour, wowing the bulging Glastonbury crowds and selling out Brixton Academy on two occasions. Sub Focus and Dimension's 2018 single 'Desire' has clocked up over 30 million global streams, signifying a new chapter in the story. Moving into 2019, the release of double-single 'Solar System' and 'Siren' conveys an artist who's stayed true to his musical roots throughout his long career.
Sunset Bros

Sunset Bros

Throughout their 15-year career, the Sunset Bros have released a slew of remixes for acts such as the Black Eyed Peas, Fedde Le Grand, Vengaboys, Bob Sinclair and Cascada.
Taglo

Taglo

Some artists make music to sell records; some artists make music to be famous, some artists make music because they’re good at it... as for Taglo, he makes music to illustrate himself. Having always had a strange allure to music, Taglo found himself drawn to soundscapes from an early age. His experience of growing up living all over the world exposed him to a wide array of music across different cultures. When he discovered artists like Axwell, Tiesto and Deadmau5, he decided to pursue his fascination for music into something more. His journey began in the cosmos of trance, and over the years, he began to slow things down to evolve into a deeper, progressive sound. Talgo's soundscaping is emotive, melodic and meaningful – there’s meaning to his melodies, and there’s drive. Taglo has supported heavy hitters including Above & Beyond, MaRLo, Dirty South, Cosmic Gate, Jody Wisternoff and more. He’s played at some of Australia’s most prestigious festivals, including Elements Festival, Circus Paradise and Babylon Festival. With years of experience under his belt, this Gold Coast artist is no amateur, and it shows with notable releases on labels Alter Ego, Freegrant Music, Skyfall Records, Silk Music and a release out on Anjunadeep in 2021. Taglo holds residences at some of Queensland’s biggest venues, including Platinum, Family and Capulet, whilst running the prominent Eden events in Brisbane and Melbourne.
